Choosing The Right Hook For You

There are a mind-boggling array of tools & resources for crochet on the market. Let us start with hooks. The shelves are stocked with a vast array of hooks from simple Aluminium ones to gorgeously brightly coloured Polymer ones, ones moulded to the shape of hands, wooden ones carved with exquisite design and simple Bamboo ones. They all have their place in the world of crochet but how do you choose one that is right for you? Let’s take a step in the direction of the total beginner to crochet.

The best advice I can give and it sounds simple is, to hold the hooks in your hand before you buy. Why? We are all different, some of us have small hands, some of us have larger hands, longer fingers and some of us may have Arthritis. All these factors can influence your hook holding comfort.

For me, I have small hands and due to the fact I crochet for many hours at a time the repetition can cause my hand to ache. I will always opt for an Ergonomic hook. My particular favourite is Clover Soft Touch. They are easy to hold and the design of the hook opens your hand slightly so you are less likely to grip too tightly. A non-slip pad for your thumb to rest on positioning (especially as a beginner) is made easier. The ‘shank’ of the hook, this is the part your yarn is worked on, is smooth, so the yarn slides effortless making crochet even more of a pleasure. I would highly recommend this hook as I do in every workshop.

If you would rather use a more natural material again there is a variety out there for you to choose from. Bamboo is becoming more popular and can be budget-friendly. These hooks can be a little more ‘grippy’ of your yarn and can feel slightly heavier.

Wooden hooks can also feel slightly heavy too, although smoother. There are many beautiful designs out there that can capture your eyes and your hearts, but if you are like me practicality takes a back seat sometimes and that is totally fine. Having a pot or jar with beautifully made hooks can be an inspiration even if they are rarely used. We all need a section in our collection called the ‘just because’. Fill your space with inspiration and colour.

Creating, Crafting, Crocheting whichever term suits you best, is all about finding you. Find a hook that fits and is comfortable because that hook, hook style, will be with you like a friend. It is there for you when the mood takes you and like a friend you need to be comfortable with it.

My favourite Hook.
